Digital technology brings nature trail to life

A new nature trail at Shaftesbury Millie College is using digital technology to enhance people’s experience of the natural environment.

A 2.4km nature trail, complete with nine interactive hubs, has been created on the college’s Holton Lee site, as part of a pilot project funded by Bournemouth University and a Higher Education Innovation Fund grant.

QR codes or web links at each of the hubs unlock a wealth of multimedia content: from wildlife videos and audio recordings, to fun facts and educational information.

Camera ‘traps’ set up around the site have captured digital footage, providing unique insights into the wildlife and habitats of the nature reserve, both during the day and after dark.

The aim of the Augmented Wildlife Experiences project is to immerse people in nature, bringing a walk outdoors to life.

Annabelle Pearsall, Education Enterprise and Visitor Services Manager, said:

“We are really excited to be collaborating on this project with Bournemouth University. Our students were the first to take to the route and test out the trail. The wonderful thing, is that it makes the wider site accessible for all, which is our main goal here at Millie College.”

Visitors can follow the nature trail during public open days at the college. Our next event is on Friday, 6 December. Tickets, £2 adults, £1 children under 16, are on sale here. Entry by pre-booked tickets only.
